Hermann Maier´s story
07. December 1972 Hermann was born in Altenmarkt/Pongau. Since then he has lived in Flachau, about 70 kilometers south of Salzburg.
Christmas 1975 The first Atomic skis are under the Christmas tree. Hermann Maier Sr. takes his son to the Grießenkar lift and is disappointed when the first try doesn´t succeed. Mother Gerti has more patience and teaches Hermann his first turns. A few days later, the three-year-old is on the lift and is helped off by the lift operator. From then on, Hermann spends every free moment in winter on the ideal slopes of the Salzburg sport world.
On the way to the breakthrough 24/25 March 1995 Hermann participates in the Austrian championship in Ellmau. With start number 130 he comes in 18th in the Giant Slalom. From then on he takes part in FIS races. Despite good results, he wasn´t admitted to the Europa Cup.
The discovery 6 January 1996 This is a date that the responsible ski officials remember. Hermann is test racer in the World Cup Ski Giant Slalom in his hometown Flachau. His unofficial time places this “nobody” 12th in a world class competition.
8/9 January 1996 Second place in his Europe Cup début in Les Arcs (France). A few days later, victory in the second giant slalom. Hermann wins four more Europa Cup races; with the championship victory he secures a position in the World Cup for the 1996/97 season.
First World Cup points 10 February 1996 Just four weeks after his start as test racer in Flachau, he debuts in the Giant Slalom race in Hinterstoder and with rank 26 he collects his first World Cup points.
The first set-back 11 January 1997 Downhill début in Chamonix (France). Hermann goes for “all or nothing”. He wants to qualify for the downhill team in the 1997 World Championship in Sestriere. His daring speed ends in the safety net with a broken wrist. No chance for Sestriere. But still: he uses the break to start training with Heini Bergmüller in Obertauern.
First World Cup Victory 21 February 1997 After missing the the World Championship, Hermann is ready for the Super G in Garmisch-Partenkirchen where he wins second place. The next day he celebrates his first World Cup victory in Super G.
The 1997/98 Season-Olympian Summit 20 November 1997 Hermann takes up the challenge right at the beginning of the season in the Giant Slalom at Park City (USA)-the beginning of an incredible string of victories.
